Funnels
β to GitHub project folder Moving flies between containers without losing or injuring them requires matching the opening sizes at both ends. Fly rearing uses three container sizes that donβt nest directly: bottles (~30 mm opening), standard 25 mm fly vials, and 12 mm test tubes used for cold anesthesia on ice before tethering. These funnels bridge the gaps between those sizes. Each funnel is a short tapered adapter that sits between the two containers; flies walk or fall through under gravity or gentle tapping.
Adapter_fly-vials-01.stl: Vial to vial (25 mm to 25 mm). Used to consolidate flies from one rearing vial into another, for example when selecting a group for an experiment.
Adapter_fly-vials-02.stl: Rearing bottle to vial. Transfers flies from a larger stock bottle into a 25 mm vial for handling.
Adapter_fly-vials-03.stl: Vial to 12 mm test tube. The last step before cold anesthesia β moves a small group of flies from the 25 mm vial into the narrow tube that will be placed on ice.
Funnel_fly-vial-to-12mm-tube.FCStd: Redesign of Funnel 3 in FreeCAD with an improved taper. This is the currently recommended version for the vial-to-12 mm-tube transfer.
